PERFORMANCES OF LITHUANIAN MARKET
Have you ever seen a theatre stage the size of some hectares? No? Then at weekends go to the biggest Lithuanian markets. There you will see real dramas and situation “buy-sell” comedies, the real market relations of the socialist society.
In Onuškis an old woman is crying because a man paid her for her suckling pig in false roubles. In Alytus a drunkard is kicking his disobedient cow. Two young people embrace behind the lorry. In Mažeikiai animals and birds are suffering from nervous strain waiting for their fate.
All of those who sold or bought something, sober or drunk after an hour will go to the church and confess to the priest their old or new sins. Then they will spend a long time in a town inn.
I love these people. Market sages, bitches and hypocrites, impatient hooligans and naïve village fools – all of them are the heroes of weekend market performances.
